Day 16: Thursday Island
October 7, 2005

By the morning, we were all rested and ready to explore our new "home". Amie and Tonia had an appointment to visit a school on Horn Island as part of Reach the World's program, and Todd and I had to take the ferry across the channel to Thursday Island to check out the Internet situation. While we were waiting for the ferry, the local School Boat pulled up to pick up the high school kids.

Once we got into town, Todd and I found Thursday Island a very quiet little place. There were a few colorful little shops, and a small grocery store run by Australian hippies. While Todd did his laundry, I found a small computer store offering Internet access for $6 per hour. I was happy.

Thursday Island has very few recreational opportunities for it's residents. Unfortunately, swimming isn't one of them.

For parents of Thursday Island, taking their kids to the playground has a small element of risk attached to it. And parking your car is not as safe as driving it.

Nevertheless, you still need to get into the water to get things done in town, like shopping and laundry. Here, the crew of the Makulu heads off to run their errands while I stay behind in the ship to get some writing done.
